DESCRIPTION:Dr Melike Erol-Kantarci\, University of Ottawa\, Canada\nCyber
-physical systems integrate Information and Communications Technology (ICT
) functions to the physical elements of a system for monitoring and contro
lling purposes. As the power grid is evolving into a Smart Grid with the e
mployment of ICT\, it is becoming one of the largest cyber-physical system
s\, where physical grid components are monitored and controlled based on t
he interactions on the cyber space. In this context\, Wireless Sensor Netw
orks (WSNs) are anticipated to be heavily utilized in Smart Grid and many
other cyber-physical system monitoring applications thanks to their low co
st and ease of deployment. Nevertheless\, there are certain challenges tha
t need to be addressed before WSNs are widely adopted in cyber-physical sy
stems. Low data rates\, limited battery lifetime and the difficulties in p
rovisioning Quality of Service (QoS) are among the fundamental challenges.
WSNs use low power communication links in dense deployments\, which intro
duces delays in channel access over a limited transmission range. Meanwhil
e\, sensor nodes run on batteries whose life can be extended with ambient
energy harvesting or energy conservation techniques while the network life
time is still short in comparison to the long-lasting operation that is de
sired by cyber-physical systems. In this talk\, we will introduce two rece
nt proposals that address latency and network lifetime drawbacks of WSNs.
In the first study\, the channel access mechanism of IEEE 802.15.4 is modi
fied to allow high priority packets to be fast tracked. In the second stud
y\, a recent technology\, i.e. wireless power transfer via electromagnetic
radiation is utilized to implement perpetual WSNs. This talk will provide
the essential background on cyber-physical systems and WSNs for the non-e
xpert audience while expert audience will be exposed to our cutting-edge r
esearch results on WSN-based cyber-physical system monitoring.
