DESCRIPTION:Dr Antonio Moschetta\, Lab Lipid Metabolism & Cancer\, Dept.Tr
anslational Pharmacol\, Consorzio Mario Negri Sud\, Italy\nPGC1 alpha and
PGC1 beta are transcriptional coactivators able to upregulate mitochondria
l biogenesis\, oxidative phosphorylation and fatty acid β-oxidation with
the final aim of providing a more efficient pathway for aerobic energy pro
duction. In the continuously renewed intestinal epithelium\, highly glycol
ytic proliferative cells in the crypts migrate along the villus axis and d
ifferentiate into mature enterocytes shifting their metabolism from glycol
ysis to oxphos and finally undergoing apoptosis. Using novel transgenic ga
in and loss of function models we will present an intriguing scenario wher
eby PGC1α and β are able to directly regulate intestinal epithelial cell
fate thus modifying mucosa architecture\, enterocyte metabolic activity a
 nd cancer susceptibility.
