DESCRIPTION:Britt Anderson\, University of Waterloo\, Department of Psycho
logy and Center for Theoretical Neuroscience\, Waterloo\, Ontario\, Canada
\nLabeling experimental effects as "due to attention" merely\ncategorizes\
, it does not explain. Many cueing experiments demonstrating\nattentional
effects share the characteristic that cues change the\nconditional probabi
lity of  target locations or features. I will present\ndata showing that
probability itself is an effective cue for\nconjunctions of target positio
n and features\, a conjunction not easily\naccounted for by models of spat
ial and feature attention. Along with\nimproving the speed and accuracy of
performance\, probability cues alter\nthe shape of error distributions so
as to increase kurtosis (both the\npeak and tails of the distributions in
crease). Changes in distribution\nshapes may suggest a mechanism for how d
ifferent stimulus frequencies \ndirectly effect behavioral performance an
d yield "attentional effects"\nwithout the need for special attentional me
 chanism.
