DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jurg Schiffmann\, Fischer Engineering Solutions AG\nBased
on the design of an oil-free turbocompressor for driving a domestic heat p
ump\, an integrated design philosophy is proposed. Compared to fragmented
design approaches the integrated optimization allowed an increase of 16 po
ints on the overall system efficiency. A radial compressor with a tip diam
eter of 20 mm has been built and tested up to 210 krpm\, reaching pressure
ratios in excess of 3.2 and isentropic efficiencies above 80% at a power
level of 1.7 kW. Experimental data and first principles based models are i
n excellent agreement. The novel compressor design yields a specific power
increased by one order of magnitude compared to current systems\, while a
llowing multi-stage and oil free compression. The technology bears the pot
ential to increase the performance of residential heat pumps by 15-20%
