DESCRIPTION:Daniel Schertzer\nEnvironmental systems are complicated\, but
also complex: not only do they have a large number of components correspon
ding to a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines\, but their nonlinear in
teractions generate an extreme variability over a wide range of space-time
scales. This is a challenge for observations\, theories\, models and appl
ications. For instance\, classical environmental observables are scale sen
sitive\, whereas the corresponding processes must be understood and repres
ented across scales rather than at a given scale. This also points out nee
ded changes in environmental science education. \nAtmospheric dynamics\, p
recipitations\, floods\, as well as city resilience\, will be used to illu
strate key questions\, such as the determination of scaling ranges and ani
sotropies\, quantification of intermittency and extremes.
