DESCRIPTION:Prof. Andrea Cavalleri\, Max Planck Institute & Oxford Univers
ity\nIn this talk\, I will discuss some our recent work aimed at controlli
ng the properties of high Tc cuprates with light. Especially innovative is
our focus on driving excitations at THz frequencies beyond their linear r
esponse regime\, exploring new regimes in the manipulation of emergent pro
perties.\nI will cover our recent work on the light enhancement of coheren
ce in the bilayer cuprate YBa2Cu3O6+x\, in which spectacular enhancement o
f coherence below Tc is observed\, accompanied by possible transient super
conductivity above Tc.\nI will discuss the combination of THz control also
with Ultrafast X-ray probing\, as achieved at Free Electron Lasers.\nBio:
As a faculty member at the University of Oxford\, Prof. Cavalleri is lead
ing a small group of students and postdocs in the application of high inte
nsity THz radiation to induce phase transitions in complex oxides\, especi
ally controlling the transition between insulating and metallic states in
manganites and between striped and superconducting phases in High-Tc cupra
tes. He was also the initiator of the Time Resolved ARPES beamline at the
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory\, for which he secured funding\, collaborat
ed at the design and developed the first scientific applications. Cavaller
i’s also group worked closely with Sarnjeet Dhesi at the Diamond Light S
ource\, co-developing time resolved capabilities at the nanoscience beamli
ne (I06).\nIn July 2008 Andrea Cavalleri became a Professor of Physics at
the University of Hamburg\, and was the first director of the Max Planck R
esearch Department for Structural Dynamics. Between 2008 and 2013\, he bui
lt a new research group engaged in experiments that range from nonlinear T
Hz methods to time resolved ARPES. Cavalleri’s group is also a frequent
user of the LCLS Free Electron Laser (Stanford)\, the FELBE THz Free Elect
ron Laser (Dresden) and the Diamond Light Source (Oxfordshire).\nSince 201
3\, Cavalleri has been serving as founder and managing director of the Max
Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter.
