DESCRIPTION:Jan de Vylder\nDifficult Double is primarily a series of lectu
 res\, which aims to offer to EPFL a portrait of the contemporary panorama 
 of culturally involved practices around the world. The format\, echoing th
 e Venturian idea of architecture as a “difficult whole”\, couples each
  time an architect’s work and his/her own main cultural reference in the
  architectural production of the past\, starting from the basic assumption
  that architecture is not so much about inventions but more about intentio
 ns. The architect and his/her obsession compose a “double portrait”\, 
 a “difficult double”\, which should provide a deeper comprehension of 
 both the architect’s and the double’s oeuvre. The culture of architect
 ure is based on misunderstandings and tweaked stories. Bad reading\, simpl
 ification and superficial interpretation of something far away\, both in s
 pace and time\, has been an engine of many of the avant-gardes of the rece
 nt past. The totality of these micro stories will inevitably create an alt
 ernative history\, an accumulated set of cultural knowledge.
