DESCRIPTION:Prof. Dr Paolo D'ODORICO\, Ecohydology Lab\, University of Vir
ginia (USA)\nIn phosphorus (P)-limited neotropical forests vegetation is
sustained in the long-term by atmospheric P-inputs through dry and wet dep
osition which are dependent on canopy density. Thus the canopy may funct
ion as a "trap" for P enabling a positive feedback between vegetation and
atmospheric P supply. I provide a quantitative assessment of these feedbac
ks and discuss how they affect both the resilience of dry tropical forests
and the sustainability of slash and burn agriculture.
