 ledge on the sources and the processing of aerosols has advanced a lot in 
 the last years. Especially little was known about the important organic fr
 action of the aerosols. In this presentation\, a summary will be given on 
 the knowledge of the sources of particulate matter in Switzerland. It will
  be shown what the composition of the aerosols typically is and how much t
 raffic\, wood burning and other sources contribute. Latest findings and co
 ncepts concerning the secondary aerosol formation from gaseous prescursors
  and the aging of the carbonaceous material will be presented
