DESCRIPTION:Dr Andrea Leiter-Scheiring\, Economics\, Faculty of Economics
 and Statistics\, Innsbruck University\, Austria\nAbstract:\nWe develop a t
heoretical account of how athletes who engage in risky sports value safety
information. Based on the model we conjecture that the demand value of sa
fety information rises with wealth and exposure and declines with the athl
ete?s ability to control risk through the use of information and skills. W
e use stated-preference data from a sample of backcountry skiers to empiri
cally test the predictions of our model. The high degree of control over a
valanche risk makes these athletes a well-suited population to study the d
emand value of safety information. Caution is however warranted as unobser
ved factors may jointly affect the athletes?\nPerceived risk and their wil
lingness-to-pay (WTP) for obtaining information. We use a recursive two-st
age estimation approach to account for endogeneity concerns. The empirical
results are generally supportive of our theoretical predictions and sugge
st that variations in athletes? WTP for safety information can be explaine
d by personal beliefs about the usefulness of information."Short biography
:\nAndrea Leiter-Scheiring is an Assistant Professor at the University of
Innsbruck\, Faculty of Economics and Statistics\, Department of Economics.
In 2005\, 2006\, and 2008/2009\, she was a visiting scholar at the Univer
sity of Maryland\, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.\nHer
fields of interest include health economics\, environmental economics\, i
nternational economics\, and applied econometrics. Her research has been p
resented in various national and international conferences and the outcome
s are published in international scientific journals like Health Economics
\, Environmental and Resource Economics or Ecological Economics. Her curre
nt research is on the valuation of mortality risks and on bilateral trade
 of natural resources.
