DESCRIPTION:Ari JUELS\, Cornell Tech\, New York\nPrivacy\, in today’s us
ual sense of confidentiality of sensitive personal information\, is an his
torical anomaly. Until recently\, it was commonplace for even the upper cl
asses to live\, die\, and engage in the most intimate activities always un
der the eyes of those around them.\nThere is a considerable risk that we a
re drifting inescapably toward such a world again. The massive sweep and s
cale of information technology\, however\, will now come into play. All ma
nner of personal data—location\, health status\, social contacts\, perha
ps even thoughts—may in coming decades be widely and continuously access
 ible by corporations\, governments\, friends\, and acquaintances.\nToday\,
the risk of abuse of sensitive personal information is typically addresse
d by ensuring that such information remains confidential. In a post-privac
y world\, it may be necessary instead to abandon most forms of privacy and
aim instead at accountability. If it is impossible to prevent personal in
formation from being leaked\, it may be possible\, at least\, to ensure th
at it is used fairly. I’ll talk about what a post-privacy world might lo
ok like and how we might prepare to navigate it.
