DESCRIPTION:David Meier (Brunel\, London)\nGeometry and Dynamics SeminarAb
stract: Particle-like solutions to partial differential equations are valu
able for their numerical tractability. In a recent paper by Jacobs\, Ratiu
& Desbrun\, it was shown by a symmetry reduction argument that there exis
ts an infinite hierarchy of particle-like solutions to a regularized form
of Euler’s equation. In this talk I will present an easy explicit constr
uction of the hierarchy. I will also show simulations that illustrate how
particles behave in collision events\; namely\, two colliding particles as
ymptotically merge into a single particle at a higher level in the hierarc
hy. This is joint work with Colin Cotter\, Darryl Holm and Henry Jacobs.
