DESCRIPTION:Prof. Sybrand van der Zwaag\, Faculty of Aerospace Engineering
\, TU Delft\, The Netherlands\nTraditionally properties of materials have
been improved via microstructual design aimed to slow down the damage deve
lopement under load or use and the development of zero-defect production t
echnologies. Hence\, all our development work is based on the Damage Preve
ntion paradigm. Nature\, in constrast\, seeems to have optimised materials
via the Damage Management concept : i.e. the occurrence of damage during
use is taken as unavoidable and to compensate for this damage the material
s have built in healing mechanisms.\nIn this talk some of the novel routes
to self healing in a range of modern engineering materials\, such as poly
mers\, composites\, metals\, asphalt\, ceramics and concrete will be prese
nted. Each of the routes respects the character of the matrix material to
be modified. Some potential applications are also presented.
