DESCRIPTION:Angela SASSE\, University College London (UCL)\nThe number of
systems and services that people interact with has increased rapidly over
the past 20 years.  Most of those systems and services have security cont
rols\, but until recently\, the usability of those mechanims was not consi
dered. Research over the past 15 years has provide ample evidence that sys
tems that are not usable are not secure\, either\, because users make mist
akes or devise workarounds that create vulnerabilities.  In this talk\, I
will present an overview of the most pressing problems\, and what researc
h on usable security (often called HCISec in the US) has produced in respo
nse to this challenge.  I will argue that much of the research to date ha
s missed the point by focusing on improving user interfaces to security me
chanisms\, or trying or educate or 'nudge' users towards secure behaviour.
I will demonstrate that usable and effective security controls need to
have minimal user workload and low friction with productive activity.
