DESCRIPTION:Dr. Konstantina Papagiannaki - Intel & CMU Pittsburgh invited
by Prof. Patrick Thiran\nAbstract :\nWhile one could argue about the degre
e of architectural change in the core of the Internet\, such a debate woul
d not even exist in a discussion about edge networks. A tremendous shift i
n the content produced and consumed inside homes has led to speedy deploym
ents of fiber to the home and changes at the edge of the network to accomm
odate traffic growth while limiting infrastructure deployment. A second dr
amatic change at the edge network is the tremendous adoption of 802.11 and
other wireless technologies by home users. As a result\, delivery of serv
ices to the home may no longer be determined by the last mile performance
but by that of the home network itself\, urging service providers to exten
d their demarkation point into the home itself. In this talk\, I am going
to discuss how one could potentially address the challenge of management a
nd control of services delivered to home users while limiting operational
cost\, drawing the analogy between the evolution of service provider netwo
rks and enterprise WLANs. Using my work in the area of centralized WLANs a
s a starting point I will comment on potential solutions that could balanc
e the cost and performance of advanced services to residential users.\n\nB
io :\nKonstantina (Dina) Papagiannaki has been a researcher at Intel Labs
\nSince January 2004\; from 2004 until the end of 2006 in Cambridge and s
ince \n2007 in Pittsburgh.\nShe got awarded her PhD from the Computer Sci
ence Department of University \nCollege London (UCL) in March 2003\, rece
iving the Distinguished Dissertations\nAward 2003. \nShe has chaired the t
echnical program committee of the premier conferences \nIn her field\, au
thored 65 peer reviewed papers\, authored a book on the \nDesign and mana
gement of large-scale IP networks through Cambridge University\nPress\, ha
 s 4 pending and 2 awarded patents\, and in 2009 her work \nreceived the b
est paper award at ACM Mobicom 2009. She currently holds an adjunct\nfacul
ty position in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon\nUnivers
ity and in 2008 she received the rising star award of the \nComputer netw
orking community of ACM. She is an associate editor for IEEE/ACM\nTransact
ions on Networking and ACM Sigcomm Computer Communications \nReview.
