DESCRIPTION:Prof. Francesco Fidecaro\nThe General Theory of Relativity pre
dicts the existence of gravitational waves. However only compact astrophys
ical objects in rapid accelerated motion can emit waves with sufficient am
plitude to stand above noise. Current instruments are now at the edge of d
etecting signals but with the next generation of detectors several tens of
binary neutron star coalescence events per year are predicted to be obser
ved. After a short introduction on sources of gravitational radiation the
main experimental challenges in detection will be presented and some resul
ts from the LIGO-Virgo network will be shown. Finally the future of the fi
 eld will be outlined.
