DESCRIPTION:Prof. Denisa Mindruta\, HEC Paris\n"A Two-sided Matching Appro
ach for Partner Selection and Assessing Complementarities in Partners’ A
ttributes in Inter-firm Alliances"Abstract\nStrategic alliances are undert
aken to create value through complementarities of resources and capabiliti
es of the partner firms. We develop a matching framework for the study of
strategic alliances\, taking a market perspective that explicitly incorpor
ates key features of transactions in strategic alliances: two sided decisi
on making in voluntary collaboration\; quest for complementarities between
indivisible and heterogeneous partner attributes\; and competition on eac
h side for partners on the other side. Noting the significant inference li
mitations of single agent binary choice models used predominantly in extan
t strategic alliances literature\, we discuss recent econometric advances
in two-sided matching models for assessing complementarities among partner
attributes and partner choice. We assess the relative performance of both
methodologies when estimating parameters within simulations based on a kn
own functional relationship\, and within the context of research alliances
  in the bio-pharmaceutical industry.
