DESCRIPTION:Dr Maxim S. Pchenitchnikov\nZernike Institute for Advanced Mat
 erials\, University of Groningen\, the Netherlands\nBulk-heterojunction or
ganic solar cells attract much interest as one of renewable energy source.
To gain insights on how to design more efficient solar cells\, fundamenta
l understanding is required of the crucial first steps in photon-to-voltag
e conversion.\nIn this presentation\, I will demonstrate how ultrafast spe
ctroscopy can be used to obtain important information on initial charge ge
neration and separation in organic photovoltaics blends. I will focus on t
he following two issues:\n(i) the interplay between intra- and inter-molec
ular electron transfer followed photon absorption\, and\n(ii) the hole tra
nsfer process from fullerene molecules to the polymers.\nWhile understandi
ng of the former processes provides important feedback to chemical synthes
is\, the latter allows for morphology characterization “on-the-fly” in
  functional devices.
