 invited by Prof. Christoph Koch\nAbstract: Information retrieval (IR) is t
 he science of searching for \ndocuments. Composite retrieval is the study 
 of methods for creating\, \nretrieving and ranking composite responses suc
 h as sequences\, or more \ngenerally\, items connected with some relations
 hip. Different \napplications induce star-shaped or chain-shaped items. Su
 ch items can be found in online \nshopping and trip itinerary planning. In
  this talk\, I will describe concrete applications \nmotivating composite 
 retrieval and discuss how stars and chains affect relevance and \nefficien
 cy in online recommendations.\n\nThis is joint work with Senjuti Basu Roy 
 (UT Arlington)\, Ronny Lempel \n(Yahoo! Labs\, Haifa)\, Gautam Das (UT Arl
 ington) and Cong Yu (Google Inc).\n\nBio: Sihem has been a Senior Research
  Scientist at Yahoo! Labs since\nMay 2006 after 7 years at AT&T Labs. She 
 received her Ph.D. in CS from U. Paris-Orsay and \nINRIA\, France. Sihem f
 ocuses on data\nmanagement\, query processing and relevance models to leve
 rage social\nbehavior for online content serving. Her professional activit
 ies\ninclude chairing the SIGMOD 2009 Tutorials\, the VLDB 2009 Industrial
 \ntrack\, the Social Networks and Personal Information track at ICDE\n2010
 \, the Structured and Unstructured Data Track at WWW10\, the\nSIGMOD 2010 
 Undergraduate Posters\, the EDBT 2011 demo track and the\nSIGMOD 2011 Info
 rmation Retrieval and Extraction track. She is a\nmember of the Board of T
 rustees of the VLDB Endowment and is of the\nACM SIGMOD Executive Committe
 e. Sihem serves as the VLDB Journal\nArea Chair in the area of structured 
 and unstructured data\nmanagement and as the Information Systems Journal A
 rea Chair in the\narea of social search and recommendations. She is curren
 tly visiting\nthe Yahoo! Barcelona Lab.
