DESCRIPTION:Dr. Orestis Malaspinas\, University of Geneva\nThe lattice Bol
 tzmann method (LBM) has established itself as an alternative computational
  fluid dynamics solver since its creation in the late 80's. Historically\,
  this numerical scheme was derived from the FHP (Frisch\, Hasslacher and P
 omeau) cellular automaton. In 2006\, it was shown that following a rigorou
 s procedure for the discretization of the continuous Boltzmann equation\, 
 one recovered the empirically derived LBM scheme. This important result ga
 ve a more solid theoretical basis to the method and allowed many more rigo
 rous derivations of numerical models. In this talk I will present recent t
 heoretical and numerical advances in large Eddy simulation (LES) technique
 s using the LBM. Then I will also discuss the modeling of turbulent bounda
 ry layers and their coupling with LES. Finally I will show some other rece
 nt applications which will be selected among blood flow modeling and noise
  source identification.\nBio: Dr. Orestis Malaspinas is a senior researche
 r in the fields of Lattice Bolzmann non-Newtonian fluids and turbulence mo
 deling. He contributed to the Palabos software by developing advanced turb
 ulence and turbulent boundary layer models. He conducts his research activ
 ities at the University of Geneva and Université Pierre et Marie Curie (P
 aris) where he maintains and encourages academic contributions to the nume
 rical models implemented in Palabos.
