DESCRIPTION:Prof. P. Sonato\nConsorzio RFX\, Univ. Padova\, I\nSufficient
and reliable additional heating power and current drive of a Tokamak plasm
a are mandatory requirements to attain and to sustain fusion thermonuclear
conditions in a reactor. Among the different systems to cope with these r
equirements the Neutral Beam Injectors are considered the “workhorse”
for the operation of a Tokamak. From the present experiments in which posi
tive ion are accelerated before neutralisation up to an energy lower than
200 keV for ITER and for DEMO it is required to inject particles based on
negative ions that have to be accelerated up to 1 MeV before the neutralis
ation.\nThe power required to satisfy the scaling requested for a reactor
increases form MW to tens of MW.\nIn the development of a system based on
negative ions accelerated to the MeV scale a number of issues has to addre
ssed to guarantee performances\, efficiency\, availability and reliability
.\nIn the talk\, starting from the present neutral beam systems based on a
cceleration of positive ions and from the actual status of development of
systems based on negative ions\, the main issues related to the developmen
t and the design of the ITER Neutral Beam Injector systems will be present
ed. Finally from the actual step of achievements and from the requirements
for a fusion reactor like DEMO\, the areas of development will be present
ed together with the pathway in which the R&D activities will have to be o
 riented in the next years.
