DESCRIPTION:Dr. Carten Rockstuhl\nPhoton management in silicon based thin-
film single or tandem solar cells constitutes a pivotal ingredient to enha
nce their efficiency. In this contribution we discuss our current work in
this field and outline how modern concepts from the field of micro- and na
nooptics may be beneficially exploited for this purpose. We concentrate on
plasmonic nanostructures\, photonics crystals\, and randomly textured sur
faces. In our theoretical work we rely on rigorous electromagnetic simulat
ions that allow for unprecedented insights into how light propagates in su
ch solar cells. From such simulations the peculiarities of the different p
hysical phenomena can be elucidated and strategies can be applied that all
ow to optimize the optical performance of the solar cell
