 t\nWhile firm competitive advantage is normally couched in terms of contro
 l\, an increasing body of research demonstrates how firms use selective op
 enness to achieve strategic goals. Such openness corresponds to recent ext
 ensions of the resource-based view\, including the dynamic\, firm-specific
  and cognitive approaches to resource valuation. We apply the RBV to devel
 op a three-phase model of the openness process\, linking the endogenous de
 cision of a firm to reduce the value of a once-valuable resource leads to 
 its resource reconfiguration and then a revised basis of competition. This
  model offer implications for research on firm-specific resource valuation
 \, the role of dynamic capabilities in resource reconfiguration\, and unde
 rstanding the long-term impacts of firm openness.Keywords: resource-based
