DESCRIPTION:Prof. Ruben L. Boroschek\nThe Feb 27\, 2010 Chile earthquake i
 s one of the largest in history and the first to be recorded with strong m
 otion instrument at close distance. The earthquake affected an area of app
 roximately 160.000 square kilometers causing nearly 550 deaths\, severe da
 mage in more than 200.000 houses and a severe tsunami. Engineering structu
 re in general responded well\, nevertheless several lessons have to be lea
 rned. The talk will present the main shaking characteristics derived from 
 the strong motion records and the main damage that suffered engineered bui
 ldings and bridges. Also a general description of Chilean design and the n
 ew trends that it will be followed considering the response of the infrast
 ructure during this severe event.\n\nProf. Boroschek graduated in Structur
 al Engineering at University of California Berkeley. He is now Associate P
 rofessor at the University of Chile\, and Vice-President of the Chilean Se
 ismology and Earthquake Engineering Association. His main research interes
 ts are: Strong motion simulation\, Experimental Dynamic of Structures\, St
 ructural Health Monitoring\, Vulnerability Assessment of Critical Faciliti
 es\, Base Isolation and Passive Energy Dissipation\, Damage Assessment of 
 Structure\, Health Care Facilities Vulnerability Studies and Mitigation\n(
 functional protection).
