DESCRIPTION:Prof. Anders Meibom\, Museum National d’histoire Naturelle -
Paris\nThe NanoSIMS is the latest generation of ion microprobes. Its high
spatial resolution\, high mass-resolution and sensitivity enable isotopic
and trace-elemental analysis to be performed on length scales much smalle
r than 1 micrometer. This creates new frontiers in the study of solid mate
rials in a wide range of research fields\, from Biology to Material Scienc
 e. The presentation will briefly introduce this new analytical technology\
, give examples of its use in the study of extra-terrestrial materials and
biominerals\, and might serve as the starting point for a discussion of f
 uture applications in other disciplines.
