DESCRIPTION:Prof. David Holden\, Imperial College\, London\nFollowing entr
y of Salmonella into host cells\, this pathogen remains in a membrane-boun
d compartment called the Salmonella-containing vacuole (SCV). Bacteria sen
se both the vacuolar and cyctosolic environments and activate the expressi
on of the SPI-2 type III secretion system (T3SS)\, and translocation of it
s effectors. The SPI-2 T3SS has been implicated in several physiological a
ctivities\, including avoidance of killing by macrophages\, bacterial repl
ication in a variety of host cell types\, interference with immune signall
ing and the induction of cytotoxicity. I will describe recent progress in
our laboratory on the functions of this complicated system.
