DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mauro Overend\nDr. Mauro Overend is Senior Lecturer in Bui
lding Engineering Design at the University of Cambridge. Currently\, Dr. M
auro Overend is visiting professor at ICOM Steel Structures Laboratory and
will provide a seminar on the most recent research developments achieved
by his Glass & Façade Technology Research Group at the University of Camb
ridge.\nThe presentation will start with a brief overview of the most rece
nt developments across a range of on-going research projects within the Gl
ass & Façade Technology Research Group. The projects are broadly grouped
into two themes: Transparent Structures and Smart Skins. They range from p
ost-fracture performance of glass to multi-objective design optimisation o
f facades.     \nThe presentation will go on to provide a further lev
el of detail on a cluster of related projects in the group on Engineered C
omposite Glass. In which glass is used compositely with other materials to
enhance its performance.Short introduction Dr. Mauro Overend:\nMauro Over
end has a first degree in Engineering and Architecture\, a masters degree
in structural engineering and a PhD in structural glass. He is a chartered
engineer and prior to moving to returning to academia worked for eight ye
ars in structural and façade engineering\, where he led multi-disciplinar
y teams on building projects in the UK and overseas. He currently leads th
e Glass & Facade Technology Research Group at the University of Cambridge
which undertakes research on the structural and environmental performance
of glass and building envelope systems. Mauro has more than 40 peer-review
ed publications to his credit and he serves on several national and intern
ational committees related to glass and façade engineering. In recognitio
n of his research on glass and façade engineering he was he was awarded t
he 2011 Guthrie-Brown medal by the Institution of Structural Engineers and
the 2013 IABSE Prize by the International Association of Bridge and Struc
tural Engineers.\nThe seminar will be held Friday 29th of August at 11:00
 in room GC B3 30.
