 t of the talk I will discuss older work on the Morgan-Shalen compactificat
 ion of the space of SL(2\,C) representations of a surface group and the re
 lationship with Higgs bundles and harmonic maps. In the second part of the
  talk I will discuss some generalizations to higher rank bundles\, and som
 e finer compactifications in rank 2 that have appeared recently. I will al
 so provide some open questions.
