                   Abstract\nWhile it is widely believed 
 that local social networks yield economic benefits\, this claim has not be
 en examined using methods that might permit confident statements about cau
 sality. We fill this gap by examining what happens to firms that become af
 filiated with highly connected local individuals.  We adopt a quasi-exper
 imental approach\, combining difference-in-differences and propensity scor
 e matching to address selection and other identification challenges. The r
