DESCRIPTION:Prof. Stéphane Jaffard\, Université Paris-Est Créteil\nMult
ifractal analysis was introduced by physicists with the purpose of using g
lobal regularity indices in order to study the intimate structure of fully
developed turbulence. A later motivation was to explain the results obser
ved as the signature of the presence of pointwise singularities of differe
nt "strengths'" in the data.\nThe heuristic arguments relating global and
pointwise regularity which were introduced for that purpose proved extreme
ly powerful inside mathematics\, supplying unifying concepts with a surpri
singly wide range of applications: Large classes of functions arising in h
armonic analysis\, or stochastic processes have been revisited using this
approach\, and were shown to display fractal sets of singularities of vary
ing fractal dimensions.\nBio: Since September 1995: Professor at UPEC Univ
 ersity (Paris-Est Créteil Val de Marne)\nJune 2007 - June 2010: President
of the French Mathematical Society (SMF)\n2000-2005: Member of IUF (Insti
