DESCRIPTION:Prof Vikram Deshpande\, Cambridge University\nBio : Vikram Des
 hpande completed his PhD in Engineering at Cambridge University in 1998 an
 d joined the faculty of Engineering as a lecturer in October 2001. He was 
 promoted to a professorship in Materials Engineering in 2010 and currently
  also holds a Visiting Professorship at Eindhoven University Mechanical En
 gineering Department. He was a tenured Associate Professor at the Universi
 ty of California\, Santa Barbara (UCSB) in 2007-2008\, and has written mor
 e than 160 journal articles in the experimental and theoretical mechanics 
 of materials. His current research interests include: mechanics of foams a
 nd lattice materials\, dynamic behaviour of structures\, micro-mechanics o
 f discrete dislocation plasticity and mechanics of composites.\nMicro-arch
 itectured cellular materials offer the opportunity of obtaining unique com
 binations of material properties. First\, a historical perspective is give
 n to the expansion of material property space by the introduction of new a
 lloys and new microstructures. Second\, principles of design of the micro-
 architecture are discussed for single-scale and multi-scale microstructure
 s along with the manufacturing challenges of such materials. The stiffness
 \, strength and damage tolerance of these materials are then reviewed and 
 compared with those of fully dense solids. It is demonstrated that micro-a
 rchitectured materials are able to occupy regions of material property spa
 ce (such as high stiffness\, strength and fracture toughness at low densit
 y) that were hitherto empty. Finally\, applications of these materials in 
 lightweight structural designs are discussed and challenges for future dev
 elopments highlighted.
