DESCRIPTION:Prof. Emanuele Martelli\, Politecnico di Milano\nIn the areas
of chemical processes and energy systems\, the relevance of black-box opti
mization problems is growing because they arise not only in the optimizati
on of processes with modular/sequential simulation codes but also when dec
omposing complex optimization problems into bilevel programs\, or when opt
imizing. The objective function is typically discontinuous\, non-different
iable\, not defined in some points\, noisy\, and subject to linear and non
linear relaxable and unrelaxable constraints.\nDr. Martelli\, after briefl
y reviewing the main available derivative-free methods applicable to this
class of problems\, will present PGS-COM\, the hybrid algorithm he recentl
y developed with Prof. E. Amaldi\, and its applications in the area of pro
cess engineering and energy systems. The algorithm combines the positive f
eatures of the Particle Swarm Optimizer\, Generating Set Search\, and Comp
lex.\nThe performance of PGS-COM has been benchmarked against eleven state
-of-the-art derivative-free methods and tested on several process engineer
ing problems\, including the optimization of CO2 capture processes (e.g.\,
Rectisol and Selexol)\, Gas-Steam turbine Combined Cycles for special app
lications\, and Organic Rankine Cycles.\nBio:\n2010: PhD degree in Energy
at Politecnico di Milano\n2007: Visiting Student Research Collaborator at
Princeton University\n2006: Master degree in Mechanical Engineer at Polite
cnico di Milano\nMain steps in academic career and work experiences:\nJuly
-September 2014: Invited Professor at EPFL\nSince January 2012: Assistant
Professor at Politecnico di Milano\nJuly-December 2011: "Adjunct Professor
" for the master level course " Energy Systems"\n2011: Consultant for Prin
ceton University\nFebruary 2008 and March 2009: Research collaborator at P
rinceton University\nSince 2009: tutor for the course "Global changes and
 sustainability" at Alta Scuola Politecnica
