DESCRIPTION:Guri Sohi\, University of Wisconsin-Madison\nFuture parallel p
rocessors will be heterogeneous\, be increasingly less reliable\, and oper
ate in dynamically changing operating conditions. This will result in a co
nstantly varying pool of hardware resources which can greatly complicate t
he task of efficiently exposing a program's parallelism onto these resourc
es. Coupled with this uncertainty is the diverse set of efficiency metrics
that users may desire.\nThis talk will describe Varuna\, a system that dy
 namically\, continuously\, rapidly and transparently adapts a program's pa
rallelism to best match the instantaneous capabilities of the hardware res
ources while satisfying different efficiency metrics. Varuna is applicable
to both multithreaded and task-based programs and can be seamlessly inser
ted between the program and the operating system without needing to change
the source code of either.\nThe talk will also present results demonstrat
ing Varuna's effectiveness in diverse execution environments using unalter
ed C/C++ parallel programs from various benchmark suites.
