DESCRIPTION:Satish Chandra - Samsung Electronics\nSatish obtained a PhD fr
om the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1997\, and a B.Tech from the Ind
ian Institute of Technology-Kanpur in 1991\, both in computer science. Fro
m 1997 to 2002\, he was a member of technical staff at Bell Laboratories\,
where his research focused on program analysis\, domain-specific language
 s\, and data-communication protocols. From 2002 to 2013\, he was a researc
h staff member at IBM Research\, where his research focused on bug finding
and verification\, software synthesis\, and test automation. He joined Sa
msung Electronics in 2013\, where he leads the advanced programming tools
research team. He is an ACM Distinguished Scientist.\nAbstract \nEmerging
wearable devices are running the same software platforms that power smartp
hones. This leads to the appealing idea that a uniform programming abstrac
tion can be used for app development for a range of devices\, from wearabl
es to smartphones. In practice\, however\, wearables will lag smartphones
in their hardware capabilities\, and this will have an impact on app devel
opment. I will talk about a few ways in which developers are likely to dea
l with the differences\, including ways in which JavaScript may be used an
d/or run differently to accommodate the different memory sizes.  I will a
lso discuss some of the work we are doing at Samsung in the area of effici
ent execution of JavaScript applications across a broad range of devices.C
ookies and drinks will be available before the talk as from 1:45pm.
