DESCRIPTION:Azlan Adnan\, Professor\, Faculty of Civil Engineering\, Unive
rsity of Technology Malaysia (UTM).Skudai\, Johor\, Malaysia\nSeismic isol
ation is a technique for the seismic protection of both new and existing b
uildings as well as bridges. The aim of seismic isolation system is to dec
ouple the building or bridge structures from the damaging components of th
e earthquake input motion to prevent the superstructure from absorbing the
earthquake energy. The isolation systems reduce forces transmitted to the
superstructure by lengthening the period and adding some amount of dampin
 g. The concept of seismic isolation has become a practical reality within
the last 20 years with the development of multilayer elastomeric bearings\
, which are made by vulcanization bonding of sheets of rubber to thin stee
l reinforcing plates. These bearings are very stiff in the vertical direct
ion and can carry the vertical load of the structures. However\, very flex
ible horizontally\, thereby enabling the structures to move laterally unde
r strong ground motion. This seminar will explain about the basic design c
oncepts and procedures in its application and why it is important for low
to high seismic prone regions of the world.
