DESCRIPTION:Dr. Stelian Coros - Disney Research Zurich\, Robotics Institut
e\, Carnegie Mellon University\nBio: Dr. Stelian Coros is a Research Scien
tist at Disney Research\, Zurich\, where he leads the Robotics and Mechani
cal Characters group. Before joining Disney Research\, he obtained his PhD
in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia. Stelian’s
research lies at the intersection of Computer Graphics\, Biomechanics\, Ro
botics and Fabrication. More specifically\, he is interested in models of
motor control\, motion planning\, physics-based simulation and computation
al design methods. The overarching goal of his work is to develop autonomo
us virtual characters and legged robots that can move with life-like grace
and agility.\nComputer graphics techniques allow artists to realize their
imaginative visions\, leading to immersive virtual worlds. Nowadays\, tha
nks to advancements in rapid manufacturing devices\, tangible links betwee
n these vivid virtual worlds and our own can be created. In order to unlea
sh the full potential of this technology however\, a key challenge lies in
determining the fundamental principles and design paradigms that allow di
gital content to be processed into forms that are suitable for fabrication
. A particularly difficult sub-task is that of creating physical represent
ations of animated virtual characters.\nIn this talk\, I will describe sev
eral techniques that can be applied towards addressing this challenge. Mor
e specifically\, I will present a set of computational systems that greatl
y simplify the process of designing 3D printable\, animated mechanical cha
racters\, and I will discuss the relation between physically-simulated vir
 tual characters and legged robots.
