DESCRIPTION:Prof. A.E. (Gusz) Eiben\, VU Amsterdam\nEvolutionary computing
in the general sense is the art of “taming evolution”. After three de
cades of research we have the know-how of setting up artificial evolutiona
ry processes in digital spaces and evolutionary algorithms have proved the
ir power in solving optimization\, design\, and modeling problems. \nIn t
his talk I outline a vision and a research programme about artificial evol
ution in physical\, rather than digital\, spaces. I argue that constructin
g systems of self-reproducing machines will lead to a new exciting mix of
evolutionary computing\, robotics\, and artificial life with new challenge
s and opportunities.\nOn the long term it could have a large impact on oth
er disciplines as well\, such as biology or industrial design. Meanwhile\,
it will also raise fundamental questions regarding the ethics and the soc
ial impacts of this future technology.\nBio: I am professor of Computation
al Intelligence on the VU University Amsterdam and Visiting Professor on t
he University of York\, UK. For the research vision of the Computational I
ntelligence Group\, please click here. My main area of expertise is Evolut
ionary Computing. I am one of the early birds in Europe\; my first Evoluti
onary Computing paper dates back to 1989 and I co-authored the first compr
ehensive book on the subject. I have been organizing committee member of p
ractically all major international evolutionary computing conferences\, ed
itorial board member of related international journals\, and coordinator/p
articipant in several EU research projects.\nMy research lies in the field
of: Artificial Intelligence\, Computational Intelligence\, Swarm Intellig
 ence\, Evolutionary Computing\, Evolutionary Robotics\, Artificial Life\,
 Adaptive Collective Systems.
