DESCRIPTION:Dr Tom Battin\,  SBER (Stream Biofilm and Ecosystem Research
 Laboratory)\, EPFL\nAbstract:\nGlaciers are a prominent component of the g
lobal hydrological cycle.\nHowever\, it is only recently that glaciers hav
e been recognized as unique ecosystems\, and even as a biome. In this semi
nar\, the potential role of glaciers for the global carbon cycle and ice-l
ocked microbial life are presented. We will also discuss how microbial lif
e organises in glacier-fed streams and how it may become affected as glaci
ers retreat.Short biography:\nTom Battin recently joined EPFL as Professor
in Ecohydraulics. He is interested in stream microbial ecology\, biogeoch
emistry and general ecology. Prior to joining EPFL he was Chair in Limnolo
gy at the University of Vienna\, Austria.
