DESCRIPTION:Dr. Laurent Pugin\, Co-director of the Swiss RISM (Répertoire
International des Sources Musicales) Office\nMost of the music that forms
the heritage of Western culture has been preserved in a written form and
held in libraries and archives. The music notation systems used in written
documents have been in constant evolution during the course of music hist
ory\, according to the needs of composers who adapted it to their ideas. T
his gives rise to fascinating challenges in the digital world at different
levels\, many of which have been research fields for years: encoding musi
c notation\, transcribing it by optical recognition\, not to mention rende
ring\, analysing and searching it.\nThanks to technological progress and t
he development of online capabilities\, we currently have unique opportuni
ties to bring these research fields together in completely new ways. This
can be done on a large scale in conjunction with bibliographic and digitiz
ation initiatives\, but also through highly specialized projects such as d
igital critical editions.\nThis presentation will look at some of the pers
pectives open to digital musicology\, in the light of leading projects tha
t are addressing those challenges.Picture by Algont from nl [CC-BY-SA]
