DESCRIPTION:Alexander Tagantsev and Véronique Michaud\nInaugural Lectures
of Senior Scientists Alexandre Tagantsaev and Véronique Michaud. ----\n\
nAlexander Tagantsev: Physical phenomena observed in ferroelectric: giant
dielectric\, piezoelectric and pyroelectric responses as well as a possibi
lity to change the direction of spontaneous polarization with the applicat
ion of an electric field have been attracting attention of physicists and
engineers for many decades. During the past two decades\, the general tre
nd to miniaturization lead to focused studies of ferroelectric phenomena a
t nano scale. A proper understanding of properties of ferroelectrics based
on their adequate theoretical descriptions has paved a way to the present
and future practical applications of ferroelectrics.\nThis lecture will d
well upon the theory of physical phenomena in ferroelectrics in the contex
t of fundamental physics and practical applications. \n----\n\nVéronique
Michaud: “Smart-material” technologies remain difficult to put into pr
actice\, largely because most of the modeling approaches needed in process
ing and property prediction of these materials are still in their infancy.
This presentation will give a view into recent and future research effort
s to bring these “smart composite materials” closer to life\, with foc
us on the processing of these materials\, and on strategies aiming to anti
 cipate and tune their performance.
