DESCRIPTION:Dr Rui M. L. Ferreira\, CEHIDRO (Centre for Hydrosystems Resea
 rch)\, Instituto Superior Técnico\, Universidade de Lisboa\, PT\nAbstract
:\nThe seminar addresses the key issues involved in simulating computation
ally the propagation of tsunamis in human-built environments such as urban
waterfronts or ports. These are flows normally laden with debris possessi
ng also an important geomorphic potential \, as seen in the catastrophic e
vents of Sumatra and Tohoku. A brief outline of the key features of a tsun
ami is followed by the description of a mathematical simulation tool devel
oped to include eulerean and lagrangian physics of debris transport. Some
numerical aspects are also addressed given the importance of conservativen
ess and robustness of wetting/drying front modelling. Some examples are sh
own\, including tsunami propagation i) over mobile beds\, ii) within highl
y resolved urban meshes and iii) within a commercial portShort biography:\
nDr Rui M.L. Ferreira is Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnic
o\, Universidade de Lisboa. His academic research includes experimental in
vestigation of fluvial and estuarine processes\, mostly involving turbulen
ce and sediment transport\, development of laboratory instrumentation and
mathematical modelling of open-channel flows. Coordinates STAV project –
a platform for modelling transient open-channel flows over mobile beds
 – and DIYPIV project – a non-commercial particle image velocimetry sys
tem. Has published more than 100 academic texts\, including over 25 journa
l papers. Has supervised or currently supervises more than 25 researchers\
, including 6 PhD candidates. Is active in the organisation of scientific
events and is a reviewer of journals in the fields of fluid mechanics\, hy
 draulics and geophysics.
