DESCRIPTION:Prof. F. Skiff\n(Department of Physics and Astronomy\, Univers
ity of Iowa\, Iowa City\, USA)\nPlasma diagnostics using laser induced flu
orescence (LIF) has a long history of successes in many contexts.  In man
y cases LIF is performed on ionic metastables.  There is a list of well k
nown precautions for the use of metastable LIF to determine the ion distri
bution function.  An additional consideration will be presented which occ
urs when most of the metastables are produced directly during ionization.
Although it seems to contradict what is in the literature\, recent experim
ental results indicate that this can happen. An approach to the data is pr
esented which enables precision experiments on metastables despite the lim
 itations.
