DESCRIPTION:Erwan GOURANTON\, lab “Lipid nutrients & prevention metaboli
 c diseases (UMR 1260 INRA/476 INSERM )\, Marseille\, France\nAdipose tissu
e is a complex organ which exerts several metabolic functions. It is invol
ved in the regulation of the energy balance and since a decade is well kno
wn as an exocrine organ which secrets several proteins collectively called
adipokines such as adiponectin\, leptin… It is one of the main organs i
nvolved in obesity where it concentrates several cellular dysfunctions whi
ch will have important physiological consequences such as development of i
nsulin resistance\, type II diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.\n\nEpide
miological studies have reported that high consumption of fruits and veget
ables is link to a decrease of pathologies such as cardiovascular diseases
\, type II diabetes and cancer\; due to the presence of micronutrients not
ably carotenoids. Among these carotenoids\, lycopene and β-carotene play
an important role. They are the main carotenoids in our diet\, and are phy
siologically store in adipose tissue. Furthermore\, others studies point t
hat the high consumption or concentration of these compounds in adipose ti
ssue is associated to a decrease of the risk to develop cardiovascular dis
eases. Moreover\, it has been recently reported that higher lycopene intak
es were associated with a lower waist circumference and visceral and subcu
taneous fat mass\, suggesting its impact on adipose tissue metabolism.\n\n
 However\, the link between carotenoids\, adipose tissue\, obesity-associat
ed pathologies is unclear. The presentation will focus on the effect of ly
copene and metabolites on several aspect of the biology of adipose tissue\
, which could be considered as particularly relevant in the context of obe
 sity-associated pathologies.
