DESCRIPTION:Dr. Silvija Gradecak\nNanostructured materials – including n
 anowires\, nanotubes\, and nanocrystals – have unique and\nsize-tunable
properties that depend on the precise arrangement of their atomic constitu
ents. These\nnanomaterials offer solutions to some of the current challeng
es in science and engineering\, and\ncould potentially lead to improved un
derstanding of the physical world and to discoveries of new\nphenomena. Ho
wever\, functionality of novel nanomaterials and their impact on society w
ill be\nultimately dictated by our understanding and ability to precisely
control their structural properties\,\nsize uniformity\, and dopant distri
bution at the atomic level.\nIn this talk\, I will discuss the growth\, do
ping\, and applications of III-V nanowires and nanowire\nheterostructures
using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition\, as well as advanced electro
n\nmicroscopy techniques for direct correlation of structural and physical
properties with high spatial\nresolution. We have demonstrated that the c
athodoluminescence (CL) technique\, coupled with\nscanning transmission el
ectron microscopy (STEM)\, effectively bypasses the resolution limit of\nc
onventional far-field photoluminescence spectroscopy and allows direct str
ucture-property\ncorrelation on the nanoscale. The CL-STEM optical studies
of single nanowire heterostructures with\nspatial resolution of <20 nm wi
ll be discussed. Finally\, applications of semiconductor nanowires for\nLE
D and solar cell applications will be described.
