DESCRIPTION:Maritan\, Amos (University of Padua\, IT)\nUnderstanding the o
rigin maintenance and loss of biodiversity in ecological systems is a goa
l of the highest scientific priority given the rapidity of global biodiver
sity loss. The dynamical behavior of an ecological communities will be con
sidered and benchmarked against the exact predictions of an effective non-
interacting model near or at stationarity. The approach provides a descrip
tion of the relative species abundance leads to a quantitative understand
ing of the species turnover distribution and extinction times and a measu
re of the temporal scales of evolution. The problem of stability and diver
sity of an interacting ecosystem will be discussed in relation with the to
pology of the interaction network.\n\nReferences\nS. Azaele S. Pigolotti
