 a--Hecke algebras are generalisations of Iwahori--Hecke algebras\, appeari
 ng in the theory of reductive groups over finite fields. I will recall the
 ir original definition and give an explicit description of the Yokonuma--H
 ecke algebra of GL(N)\, which will be our object of study. In this case\, 
 I will also describe an independent motivation for their study\, coming fr
 om links theory.\nThen I will present our main result\, which is an isomor
 phism theorem for the Yokonuma--Hecke algebras of GL(N)\, together with tw
 o applications. The first one is for the representation theory of these al
 gebras and the second one is concerned with the study of Markov traces and
  the construction of link invariants. This is a joint work with Nicolas Ja
 con.
