 ft in computer science from classical\, closed computer systems to open\, 
 interactive systems whose components harness each other's power. This is p
 articularly true in Human-Computer Interaction\, where research has shifte
 d from user interfaces for controlling computational processes to large-sc
 ale mediated communication tools\, such as the Web\, and mixed reality env
 ironments that foster creativity. In this talk I will explore the notion o
 f _interactive computation_[1]  in the context of Human-Computer Interacti
 on. I will emphasize the need to create novel models\, tools and interacti
 on techniques that leverage interaction and treat it as a first-class obje
 ct. I will illustrate this approach with some of our work at the InSitu la
 b\, in particular instrumental interaction\, multi-scale interfaces and re
 flective\, reconfigurable tools.
