DESCRIPTION:Prof. Dr Helena M. Ramos\, University of Lisbon\, Instituto Su
perior Técnico\, Portugal\nAbstract: The definition of suitable design cr
iteria in hydraulic systems is of utmost importance and has become a prior
ity for good design implementation. The dynamic behaviour of hydropower st
ations and the interaction with long hydraulic circuits are the major cons
traints for safety solutions. Water needs and energy saving have become co
ncerns over the last years and it is expected to become more and more impo
rtant in the near future due to the effect of the climate change on the wa
ter and energy sustainability. Following the fuel crises\, hydropower has
become one of the most important clean and renewable energy sources. Optim
ization methods are used to define the system operation\, as well as econo
mic analysis\, while satisfying the system constraints and priorities. Pum
ped-storage solutions can be used to solve problems of energy production\,
as well as in the integration of intermittent renewable energies\, provid
ing system elasticity due to energy loads’ fluctuation\, as long as the
storage of energy from intermittent sources. Water supply systems present
high-energy consumption values. Energy costs are a function of its consump
tion and of the variability of the daily energy tariff. The need for a bet
ter use of water and energy has been considered as one of the most importa
nt subjects towards future water smart grids.\nBio :\nHelena M. Ramos has
a Ph.D. degree and Aggregation title and is Associate Professor at Institu
to Superior Técnico (University of Lisbon) at Department of Civil Enginee
ring. She is expert in different scientific domains\, including: Hydropowe
r and Pumping Systems\; Surge Control\, Safety and Operation - Dynamic Eff
ects\; Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) - Hydrodynamic and Mathematical
 Modelling\; Water and Energy Efficiency\; Hybrid Sustainable Solutions\; O
ptimization in Pumping/Turbine Management. She has more than 350 publicati
ons\, being one book in small hydro\, more than 60 in scientific journals
with referee and 150 in international conferences. She has supervised seve
ral post-doc\, PhDs and MSc students and she is author of eight innovative
solutions in the domain of Civil Engineering - hydropower and hydraulic s
 ystem control.
