DESCRIPTION:Prof. Dirk Vanderzande\, University of Hasselt\, Institute of
Material Research\, Leuven Belgium\nThe field of polymer PhotoVoltaics (PV
)1 has witnessed a fierce development since the first solar cell of this k
ind was built in the 90’s. Since then the efficiency has increased to al
most 11% in a single junction. This progress is a result of a combination
of new materials\, insight in working principles and new architectures. Ma
terial classes will be discussed\, also with examples of work at imo-imome
c2. Secondly efficiency is critical dependent on achieving an intimately m
ixed nanomorphology of the donor (conjugated polymer) and acceptor (fuller
ene) material. This creates a bulk heterojunction which allows for obtaini
ng high performance. The fysico-chemistry behind these material systems st
arts to be unraveled3 and is essential in understanding what is going on.
Recently we started to study also different interlayers which can lead to
improvement of more than 15% of the achieved efficiency4. The last critica
l parameter is lifetime and understanding aging of devices. Some examples
of this work will also be presented\, specifically related to the study of
the behavior of the nanomorphology under thermal stress.\n1. X. Guo\, A.

ies of mechanisms of thermal induced rearrangement reactions of ortho-quin
odimethane systems. Permanent position as senior post-doc researcher since
1987 at the University of Hasselt (Belgium) joining the research group
“Organic and Polymeric Chemistry”. Expert domains: Organic Synthesis\,
Polymer Synthesis\, Advanced Organic and Polymeric Materials for Optical
and Electronic applications. In 1992 appointed as assistant professor (doc
ent) at U Hasselt. In 1995 appointed as associated professor (hoofddocent)
at UHasselt and from 1999 appointed as full professor at UHasselt. In 201
0 appointed as director of the Institute of Material Research (imo-imomec)
at UHasselt. He published around 300 papers and is coauthor on 18 patents
