DESCRIPTION:NIH Agency\nThe Funding Opportunity Announcement\, issued by t
 he National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)\, encourage
 s grant applications to understand the role of environmental chemical expo
 sures in the development of obesity\, type 2 diabetes and/or metabolic syn
 drome. Applications must link an environmental exposure to the increased i
 ncidence of weight gain\, glucose tolerance/insulin sensitivity and aspect
 s of metabolic syndrome in animal models or human studies. While any expos
 ure window is acceptable it is anticipated that the most sensitive time fo
 r exposures to affect the disease outcomes will be during development e.g.
  in utero and/or neonatal or early childhood. For human studies developmen
 tal exposures (in utero and early childhood) should be linked to early bio
 markers of disease onset. Animal studies should focus on identifying envir
 onmental chemicals that alter endpoints indicative of affecting disease de
 velopment and the site and mechanism(s) of the effects that lead to the in
 creased disease incidence.
